Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for bulk product packaging and storage
   • Access, interpret and apply product packaging and storage documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Communicate with other personnel using approved communication methods
   • Select, and check for faults, tools/equipment for work activities
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
   • Use approved dust suppression and extraction methods
   • Ensure work area is well ventilated before entry
   • Prepare site for positioning of mobile packaging equipment
   • Position and stabilise mobile equipment
   • Check condition of packaging meets work requirements
2. Start-up equipment in sequence
   • Carry out start-up procedures and complete start-up checks
   • Confirm plant is operational within specifications
3. Package product
   • Read and interpret equipment indicators and monitor packaging efficiency
   • Continuously inspect plant and identify operational defects and potential problems
   • Adjust equipment to optimise performance
   • Control feed to packaging unit
   • Take samples of product
   • Seal, label package and secure for transport
   • Prevent unauthorised entry to personnel and maintain security of packaging area
   • Complete all required documentation
   • Complete written reports and records
4. Store product
   • Store product in an approved location and secure environment
   • Position and brace packaged product according to transport requirements
5. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage/report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
   • Process written records
6. Shutdown in sequence and/or isolate equipment
   • Perform post shutdown/isolation checks
   • Complete equipment shutdown/isolation

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of the bulk packaging and storage of product including:

conducting prestart checks and shut-down operations

applying diagnostic techniques

selecting and using relevant tools

working wearing personal protective equipment

hazardous goods handling and management

conducting operational maintenance

working at heights

using alarm/monitoring and control systems

using lifting techniques (manual, cranes and loads)

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the bulk packaging and storage of product that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

clarifying work requirements and instructions

inspecting and preparing work area and equipment

demonstrates completion of the bulk packaging and storage of product that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing work plan completing equipment shutdown/isolation

completing housekeeping activities

carry out pre-start, start up and shut down procedures

control feed to packaging unit

seal and label package ready for transport

take samples of product

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in bulk packaging and store product through:

site product characteristics

plant components functions, characteristics, technical capability and limitations

being prepared for fire/accident/emergency

using hauling procedures (mobile)

using loading procedures

hazardous goods and consequences of spills

reading and interpreting metallurgical and technical data (basic)

product packaging and storage requirements

applying towing procedures (mobile)

types of ores (basic)

applying wet and dry working procedures
